Us on video

Here are a few video clips of us enjoying our learning...

We love singing. One of our favourite songs at the moment is "Mr Sun". Here we are singing it at the start of the day.

We made some drums and we explored different ways of making sounds with them.

Friday highlights

We learnt about area in Math today. We firstly, guessed how many little poppies could fit inside the giant poppy. Someone predicted 100 poppies, and another, 16. In fact, Dinarah was closest with her guess of 30 poppies.

When we attached our little poppies we said, "We will remember them".

We have been learning the Ode of Remembrance this week. We used the poem as part of our wreaths.

We started our circle weaving today. Some of us were very quick to master the over-under pattern.

Armistice Day 11/11

Armistice Day (or Remembrance Day as it is known in America) is a day to remember the end of World War 1. It is an important day to think about the importance of peace in our world, and that many people's lives were lost so we can have freedom and peace today.

Room 11 students have been reading some World War 1 stories and gaining an insight into what freedom vs war means. They are learning that war is not something to be celebrated.

At 11am on 11 November each year, people all over the world stop for two minutes of silence. The first minute is to remember those families who lost their sons and fathers. The second minute is to remember those that died during the war.

The Last Post is a piece of music that helps us to remember the soldiers that have died. The video below shows some scenes from the war.

Poppy Day

Thursday highlights

We love singing in the morning when we start our day at school. At the moment our favourite songs are, 'Have a good day', 'Oh Mr Sun', 'You are my Sunshine', and 'School is Number One'.

For our writing inspiration this morning, we watched a short video of the story 'Little Red Riding Hood'. We wrote a great story together, then went off to write our own stories. Dinarah has started another really great story!

After lunch we listened to the story, 'Grandad's Medals'. We have been learning a little bit about the world wars from stories this week because Friday is Armistice Day and our teacher wants us to know why it is an important day.

We tried to make some pois today. First we had to plait the handles but that was really tricky. It was a bit easier to squish the stuffing inside a piece of plastic. Our teacher had to finish the job for us. Now we will use the poi when we are singing some Maori songs.

Narrative Stories

We are learning to write Narrative stories. This week we have been looking at a picture of a soldier who looks very sad. We thought that he might be sad because his friends died in the war.

Here is Ofeyliah's story:

Long, long ago there was a soldier. He was sad. All of his friends died. He went back to see his friends at the cemetery. That was the end of that.

This is Kalo's story:

Long, long ago in New Zealand there were soldiers who went far far away from New Zealand to fight. Some went back to see their soldier friends that had died. Then the soldier went back home.

Testing ideas

In our Technology lesson we tried making a small bag or box to carry a cupcake. Because it was a trial, we used paper.

Some of us had great ideas but we are thinking that we should use stronger glue. If we had a cupcake it would help us to get the shape of our box or bag right.

During Math we measured some giant footprints using paper clips, match sticks and pegs.

Most of the class produced amazing poem illustrations today. We even drew pictures of the first car which was invented by Henry Ford!

We started to warp our paper plate looms, but it was really tricky!
