Friday in Room 11

At Kiwi Can we were learning about different kinds of emotions. We show our emotions so that other people can understand how we feel.

We play some fun games at Kiwi Can too. In this game we had to do 5 star jumps before racing off to find a picture.

Here is our 'super-star' who listened the best during our session today. Ka pai Claryssa!

We illustrated our poem called, 'The Olympic Torch' and then we made one of our own.

Before going home we finished making the bases for our artwork. Some of us knew how to use the hot glue gun.

Birdwood Olympics Day

What a fun day we had. We were very excited to wear our house colours to school. We got together in the hall to have a special 'opening celebration' and in the afternoon we played games with our Buddy Class, Room 2, and Room 7.

Thinking about numbers, & Brazil

During Math time today some of us worked on number identification.

Some of us practiced writing numbers.

We thought of three things we want to find out more about in our Brazil topic:

1. Animals that live in Brazil.
2. Beaches in Brazil.
3. Information about the Jesus statue (Christ the Redeemer).

We will learn how to find information using non fiction books, and the Internet.

At the end of the day we finished off our Olympic bunting. It looks great!

A busy Monday

Today we really enjoyed our gymnastics class! Here are some of us having a blast.

At Writing time we watched a video of part of the Olympic Games Opening Ceremony when the Olympic flame was lit. We were amazed by the giant fireworks display afterwards! Each of us made a picture plan about what we saw and will begin writing the story tomorrow. Two of our friends finished their picture plans so quickly!

Today we saw an Olympic medal table and learnt how to read it. We learnt that if you are the winner at the Olympics you receive a gold medal. The second place getter receives a silver medal, and a bronze medal is given to the third place getter. We were happy to learn that New Zealand trap shooter, Natalie Rooney won a silver medal this morning! Ka pai Natalie!

We learnt about some other New Zealand athletes and their sports. We had to match up the pictures of the athletes to the right name. It was a bit tricky, but we got there in the end.

Fun Friday

Fridays are fun in Room 11 because we do some special activities. We start each Friday with our Kiwi Can leaders. Today they talked with us about emotions.

We had to look at pictures and talk about the emotion shown by the character, and how they were showing it. We also discussed how to help someone who is feeling sad.

We had fun moving like we were happy, sad, angry and excited!

Later in our classroom we took turns talking about what makes us happy. Most of us feel happy when we are eating our favourite food!

We did a listening activity this afternoon. Our teacher told us what to draw and we had to listen carefully to what she said so that our drawing would be accurate. These friends did a great job following the directions...

Our teacher talked with us about the Olympic Opening Ceremony which will be held tomorrow morning (NZ time) in Rio. She explained that Brazil will host a performance of singing and dancing for the athletes and visitors from all around the world. To make it easier for us to understand, she showed us part of the Opening Ceremony of the London Olympics. We were intrigued by the drumming and dancing.

To celebrate the Rio Olympic Games, we made some bunting using the flag of Brazil, and pictures of the Olympic mascots, Vinicius and Tom.

Another busy Friday is over! Have a happy weekend everyone!

Learning together

In Room 11 we do many activities to stimulate our learning. One of the activities we love the most is singing 'The Phonics Song' which helps us remember all the letter sounds.

We say a morning karakia to remind us to think positively about our day together. We take turns being the leader for the karakia. We love taking responsibility.

Our favourite 'brain break' activity is acting out the Olympic sports. We love moving!

Today we learnt how to play dominoes. We are learning to sit quietly and wait for our turn to play.

What we know about Brazil

During Inquiry Studies time today we thought about what we already know about Brazil. Our teacher wrote down our ideas on the 'K' part of our KWL Chart.

This is what we already know about Brazil...

There is a statue of Jesus there. (Maxton)

Many people visit the statue of Jesus. (Paradise)

Brazil celebrates a festival and people wear costumes, and dance. (Talepita)
